Avatar 3 will make the protagonists more interesting – James Cameron talks about his characters in the third installment of the popular franchise.

Avatar: The Way of Water hit theaters almost a year ago and became one of the highest-grossing films at the time.

The third installment will arrive next year and James Cameron interviews GQ to talk about the scope of the new adventure; The director affirms that Avatar 3 will be a deep character study, focusing with special interest on its protagonists and their actions.

It seems that the filmmaker wants to take the narrative even further.

The Avatar franchise centers on an alien world called Pandora, home of the Na’vi race.

The first film, released in 2009, follows the story of Jake Sully (played by Sam Worthington ), a paraplegic ex-Marine who infiltrates Na’vi society using a mind-controlled avatar to aid the exploitation of Pandora by humans in search for a valuable mineral. However, as Jake becomes involved with the Na’vi, he begins to question the actions of his own species and falls in love with Neytiri (played by Zoe Saldana ).

The film became a global phenomenon, setting box office records and winning three Academy Awards, including Best Director for Cameron .

Avatar: The Way of Water continues the story of Jake and Neytiri, who formed an extended family. However, their peace of mind is threatened when the skymen return and unleash a series of problems that relentlessly haunt the family.

In order to keep his people safe and ensure his own survival, Jake is forced to make difficult decisions and make a great sacrifice. Leaving their home, they venture into the unknown regions of Pandora, where they will fight arduous battles and face personal tragedies.

The third installment will pick up right where the second left off and this is what new James has to say about it:

“The big [creative breakthrough in Avatar 3] will simply be more depth to the characters. We’re seeing new cultures, new creatures, all the same things you’d expect from an Avatar movie, but the whole idea of this film series is to live with such people and travel with them.

So I think it’s not about ‘Let’s show you the best aquatic [VFX] ever made,’ but you get deeper into the heart and soul of the characters. And some very interesting new characters also appear. This is a trip through time. It will take place in movie three, movie four, and movie five. There is an epic cycle to the whole thing.”
