If you thought that the craze for musical biographies was a thing of the past, think again.
Probably the most anticipated film of this type is Back to Black, the biopic of the late Amy Winehouse.
The British singer, who received wide acclaim after just two studio albums were released in the second half of the 2000s, will be the latest star to see her story told through film.
What is ‘Back to Black’ about?
Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson , Back to Black will chronicle Amy Winehouse’s early days in London’s underground music scene and her rapid rise to global fame, as well as her problems with paparazzi and addiction.
Her main character is played by Marisa Abela, who will see her first big project with her role and about whom the director had nothing but good comments:
“The moment she saw the lens of her at her first audition I knew she was the perfect actress to be Amy Winehouse. She has put a tremendous amount of work and attention into every detail and has trained for hours to be able to sing throughout the entire film. He doesn’t imitate Amy, he inhabits her.”
As you can read, Abela performed covers of Winehouse classics. It is known that the singer’s family gave their blessing to the project and Back to Black will be able to use the performer’s most famous songs.
The real question now will be to see how much they will allow themselves to show the darker side of her substance abuse and her dependent and sometimes violent relationship with fellow musician Blake Fielder-Civil.
The film takes its title from ‘Back to Black’, the singer’s second and final studio album in which she reflected on her self-destructive behavior, her toxic interpersonal relationships and her difficulty staying sober.
The best-remembered songs from this material are “Rehab,” the title track, and “You Know That I’m No Good.” In the trailer it seems to suggest that the pressures of fame will be an important topic.
Previously, the cinema had already been interested in his personal figure and as a musical artist. The documentary Amy: The Woman Behind the Name, which she recovered footage from throughout her life to tell her story.
The film received great acclaim and ended up winning the Oscar for Best Documentary Film. So it is not a surprise that later there was also an interest in making a fiction of her time in this world.
Winehouse passed away in mid-2011 at the young age of 27. Her cause of death was determined to be alcohol poisoning.
The poor state of health facilitated her death. In addition to her addictions, she suffered from bulimia. There is still no release date for Back to Black in Latin America, but in the United Kingdom it is expected to hit theaters in May.
