Camila Avella: 1st Mom top 5 finisher in Miss Universe

Camila Avella, Miss Universe Colombia, made history by being among the top five finalists of the Miss Universe 2023 beauty pageant, the event took place on Saturday, November 18, at the José Adolfo Pineda National Gymnasium in San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador.

The 28-year-old girl, originally from Yopal, Casanare, was one of the favorites of the contest from the beginning, thanks to her beauty, charisma and her story as a mother. Camila was the first Miss Universe Colombia married and with children chosen to represent the country, after the organization of the pageant modified the rules of the contest. They now allow the participation of married women, women with children and trans women.

Well, it is the first time that Avella has had in mind to participate in a beauty contest, since, in 2018, with the endorsement of the Government of Casanare, the model wanted to represent her department in that edition of the National Beauty Contest in Cartagena.

However, Raimundo Angulo, president of the pageant and who had the rights to Miss Universe – before the purchase by Natalie Ackermann – denied her permission. Angulo assured that the llanera could not compete in Miss Colombia, since she had supposedly posed naked in some photographs, which were not found.

On the final night, Avella shone in a swimsuit, evening dress and in the question round. In the latter, the Colombian was asked by the Mexican influencer and singer Mario Bautista: “If this were your last day on Earth, how would you live it?”

“I’m living it. Being here, showing that women are strong and brave, breaking stereotypes, being a mother and a woman, is leaving a story and a legacy, which is what I want to transmit to many children, women and mothers,” Camila responded.

She later reached the ‘top’ 5.In conclusion, the roster of the top 10 comprised Puerto Rico, Thailand, Peru, Colombia, Nicaragua, Philippines, El Salvador, Venezuela, Australia, and Spain. Following this, the top 5 consisted of Australia, Puerto Rico, Nicaragua, Thailand, and Colombia.

Finally, Sheynnis Palacios, Miss Nicaragua, was crowned the new Miss Universe after beating the candidates from Thailand (second runner-up) and Australia (third runner-up).

Miss Universe 2024 will take place in Mexico. This was announced by the organization minutes before choosing R’Bonney Gabriel’s successor, Miss Universe 2022 and Miss United States. The 73rd edition would take place in September.
