Renowned film director Christopher Nolan has surprised the film world by expressing his interest in venturing into the horror genre. During a conversation event at the British Film Institute (BFI) in London, Nolan shared his perspective on the genre and his possible foray into it.
Will Christopher Nolan make a horror movie?
Nolan, known for blockbusters like Inception, The Dark Knight trilogy, and the recent Oppenheimer revealed that he has considered the idea of directing a horror film, as long as a sufficiently exceptional idea emerges. In response to a question from an audience member about the possibility of him making a horror film, Nolan said (via Variety):
“ ‘Oppenheimer‘ definitely has horror elements in it, as I think is appropriate for the subject matter. I think horror films are very interesting because they rely on very cinematic devices, it’s really about a visceral response to things and at some point I would love to make a horror film. But I think a really good horror movie requires an exceptional idea. And those are few and far between. So I haven’t found a story that lends itself to that. “
The filmmaker highlighted the complexity and rarity of exceptional ideas necessary for a horror film, suggesting that he has not yet found a story that meets his standards of quality and originality in the genre.
The director also shared his thoughts on the film genre as a whole, specifically highlighting the unique characteristics of horror movies. He emphasized that horror films have the ability to tackle dark and abstract themes that are often avoided in other types of cinema. According to him, horror is one of the few genres where studios produce a considerable number of films that embrace darkness and abstraction, qualities that Hollywood is typically hesitant to incorporate. Nolan added that this aspect of the genre is allowed and even encouraged, making it a distinct and important genre in the realm of filmmaking.
The chat event, moderated by BBC presenter Francine Stock, covered Nolan’s entire career, from his early work to his most recent successes. In addition to discussing his future projects, Nolan also shared his reflections on the writing and editing process, the importance of cinematography and music in his films, and the impact of his actors on his works.
Nolan’s announcement is likely to generate quite a stir among cinephiles and film critics, who are waiting with bated breath to see how the director approaches the horror genre, if he finally finds the right idea to bring to the big screen.
