Fire and Blood is a novel written by George RR Martin and on which almost the entire plot of House of the Dragon is based. This book is a historical chronicle spanning some 300 years of Westeros history, focusing on the Targaryen dynasties, a noble house with a lineage of dragons.

From Aegon the Conqueror to Aegon III, the tale chronicles the rise, rise and decline of this powerful family, as well as the wars, betrayals and alliances that shaped the kingdom before the events of the main series.

The Dance of Dragons is a central conflict in the story told in Fire and Blood, describing the civil war that devastated Westeros during the reign of the Targaryen dynasty.

This war took place approximately 200 years before the events of A Song of Ice and Fire and pitted different factions of the Targaryen family in a brutal fight for control of the Iron Throne.

The war broke out due to succession disputes and rivalries between the heirs of Rhaenyra Targaryen and Aegon II Targaryen, triggering a conflict where dragons, symbols of power and destruction, played a crucial role. The second season of the series will present us more about this confrontation and Martin already has his first impressions of it:

Of course, I’m not at all objective when I talk about something based on my own work… but I have to say that I thought both episodes were just great.

Powerful, emotional, heartbreaking, heartbreaking. Just the kind of thing I like. (What can I say? I was weaned on Shakespeare and love tragedies and history plays the most.)
