Dune: Part Two, until a couple of months ago, was one of the most anticipated releases for 2023. However, the strikes of scriptwriters and actors forced the production company to change its arrival date.
An important part of its success is that they can make good use of Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Austin Butler and Florence Pugh in the main roles.
The film will now arrive in March and a new trailer reminds us of the power of history and the destiny that Paul must follow even if he doesn’t want to.
What is ‘Dune: Part Two’ about?
Following the events of Dune that led to the murder of Leto Atreides ( Oscar Isaac ), Paul manages to escape alongside his mother, Jessica ( Rebecca Ferguson ), who wants to keep him as safe as possible.
Unable to ask the Emperor ( Christopher Walken ) for help after discovering that the trip to Arrakis was a plan to destroy their family, they both decide to settle and travel with the Fremen, who can survive in that arid land and have their own desire for revenge against the Harkonnen family for exploiting its resources for so many years.
Paul, following the political world he grew up in, considers a plan to reach the Emperor and marry his eldest daughter named Irulan (Florence Pugh), but now that he knows the goal was to end his lineage, he must admit that war is the only option.
Of course, the young man continues to have dreams that show him what will happen when he obtains so much power, and although he does not want to follow those steps, all paths lead him to that end full of blood, fire and destruction, the starting point for the new trailer for the sequel.
Being considered a novel too long and complex to be adapted into a single film, Denis Villeneuve proposed to Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros to work on the story in two parts, with the second receiving the green light only if the first was a success with the public and at the box office.
By achieving this goal, the sequel became one of the most interesting projects of the company, who are sure that they can continue exploiting the material with a third film and spin-offs for the small screen.
What does this new advance reveal to us?
Before we get ahead of ourselves and think about more movies, Dune: Part Two must go through the global box office and surpass the numbers of the first installment, and everything indicates that it will be able to do so without problem.
In addition to having a quite interesting cast that also includes Javier Bardem, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Josh Brolin and Léa Seydoux, this sequel promises more action and war scenes to compensate for the more contemplative parts that are still essential for the plot and the Villeneuve’s personal vision.
In this new trailer we can see Paul having more dreams about what will happen if he gains power, but also what happens if he fails to defeat his enemies and they conquer the entire known universe.
Neither alternative seems ideal, but the protagonist is ready to sacrifice everything to save those he loves and this new land he calls home.
In the trailer we can also see more of Butler as Feyd-Rautha, who wants to finish off Paul and whose meeting is a key point of this installment.
Dune: Part Two will hit commercial theaters on March 1 and hopes to have no competition to dominate the box office for at least a couple of weeks.
Denis Villeneuve is already ready to work on the next installment that would adapt the second book by Frank Herbert, but before returning to the world of Arrakis he wants to take a break because he has dedicated many years to this vision that was a dream for him.
If things don’t go as planned, the creator is willing to end things with this movie, thus delivering the complete adaptation of the first novel.
However, it is very likely that the company wants to continue exploiting the idea, since in addition to a spin-off series for streaming, they are already analyzing what they could do with the rest of the texts that go beyond Paul’s trip.
