During an interview with PEOPLE, Alaqua Cox, the star of the newly released Marvel Studios series Echo, shared moving details about her past, highlighting her journey from facing bullying in her childhood to becoming an acclaimed on-screen superhero, who had its debut a couple of years ago.

The Echo Series, which released all of its episodes on Disney+ and Hulu this week, has seen success on both streaming platforms.

Cox plays Maya Lopez/Echo, a character who made her first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in Hawkeye. Her acting journey has been unique, as her role as Maya marked her acting debut.

The opportunity to play Maya arose when her friends sent her Marvel’s casting call, which was looking for a deaf and indigenous woman in her 20s.

In addition to fitting that description, Cox is an amputee, but this hasn’t stopped her from being active physically.

Talking to PEOPLE (via Comic Book ), she shared the experiences of her childhood bullying, and being a victim of discrimination for being deaf and an amputee.

“There was no awareness at all about deaf culture. I was harassed for being deaf and an amputee, and I complained, but management wouldn’t listen to me.”

What makes her story even more shocking is the irony of life:

“It is funny. When I got this role, those people who used to harass me contacted me. I am very proud to be able to show them that I can do anything. Like the normal person, I am able to achieve everything. I can be a superhero. Everything is possible.”

This brave testimony from Cox highlights not only her success in the world of entertainment, but also her fight against the stigma and discrimination faced by deaf and disabled people.

In recent years, there has been an increase in public awareness of these issues, but there is still work to be done.

Bullying of deaf people is a persistent problem that has affected many, and Cox’s story serves as an inspiration to those who have faced similar challenges.

Awareness of deaf culture and inclusion has expanded, but it is essential to continue advocating for cultural change that celebrates diversity in all its forms.

The positive reception to the series and the growing interest in Maya Lopez’s story suggest that she could play a crucial role in future events of the franchise.

Given that Echo is part of Phase Five of the MCU and the first series under the Marvel Spotlight label, it’s plausible that we’ll see Alaqua Cox reprise her role in future film or television productions.

Connecting with established characters like Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, played by Vincent D’Onofrio, could lead to intriguing collaborations.

Echo ‘s story, with its roots in the community and her personal journey, could further enrich the overall narrative of this cinematic universe, exploring new dimensions and emotional challenges.

All in all, the future for Echo looks bright, with exciting possibilities for expansion and development in the vast Marvel Studios universe.
