What is the Netflix series The Three-Body Problem about?
Through its networks, Netflix shared the first trailer for its series The Problem of the 3 Bodies, starring Eiza González. The preview condenses the premise of the book on which it is based, one of the best science fiction novels of the millennium, and reveals that there is something that is killing some of the most brilliant scientists on the planet.
The character of the Mexican actress is Auggie Salazar, an expert in nanotechnology and who begins to hallucinate a series of numbers.
The showrunners of the series are DB Weiss and David Benioff, creators of the acclaimed Game of Thrones. And while this gave pause to some fans of the novels, this first trailer shows that they will be sticking to the literary story.
As most fans of the HBO title will remember, it is when they stay close to the author’s work that their work is much better done.
Is it really all about a serial killer of scientists? No. Like the best thrillers, something much bigger is hidden behind those deaths. But revealing it could basically save them the novel.
The Three-Body Problem , as the book is also titled, has been celebrated for its hard science fiction elements, as well as for the plot of the most unexpected conspiracy for the reader.
If you’re observant, you’ll notice that there are period elements in some shots of the trailer. This is because the investigators of the case discover that the deaths are related to a virtual reality game in which users encounter intellectual figures from the history of humanity.
All while discussing the titular three-body problem, a phenomenon of gravitational physics in which the proximity of three objects places them in an unstable orbit system between them.
The original material is in fact a trilogy in which The Dark Forest and The End of Death are its second and third installments respectively.
It’s really difficult to talk about the originality and ingenuity with which Chinese author Cixin Liu imagined a catastrophic global event without revealing too many details. But what we can confirm is that, if handled carefully, the series could have the potential to be as impactful as those early seasons of Lost.
For now, it remains to be seen if Weiss and Benioff manage to achieve a decent adaptation of The Three-Body Problem and then also capture the shocking and shocking nature of its revelations. The show will arrive on Netflix starting March 21. Until then, the platform will have to face another passionate fandom with its live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender, which will premiere at the end of February.
