Erin Moriarty, known for her role as Starlight on the hit series “The Boys“, has announced her decision to leave Instagram after being the subject of criticism and harassment online, attributing the situation to former Fox News host Megyn Kelly.
The Boys” star has shared her frustration and experience of verbal abuse after Kelly released a video on her YouTube channel accusing her of undergoing plastic surgery.
Why will Erin Moriarty close her social networks?
In a message posted to her Instagram account, Moriarty expressed her surprise and dismay at Kelly’s defamatory content. The actress claimed that she has never had plastic surgery and that Kelly’s accusations are false.
The situation has become so unbearable for Moriarty that she has decided to close her social media accounts to protect her emotional well-being.
“This is something I never really anticipated writing. We are all subject to levels of bullying throughout our lives, but I am horrified and felt I deserved to take a second to address these things. To be honest, I had no idea what was going on because I had one of the most challenging weeks of my life.
And I specifically thought that as I come out of this period of time, so stressed that I’ve barely been able to eat and sleep. I thought, “Okay, I’m going to lose 10 pounds and the verbal abuse and accusations will fly, usually either for drug use or just a flippant ‘eat a hamburger’ comment.”
Controversy broke out when Megyn Kelly aired a segment on “The Megyn Kelly Show,” along with commentator Michael Knowles, discussing plastic surgery as a “social disease.”
In this segment, Kelly accused Moriarty of being an example of a supposed “addiction” to altering her face and called these changes a sign of “mental illness.” The video included footage of Moriarty that Kelly said demonstrated his transformation.
Moriarty, in her response, clarified that the image that Kelly presented as recent was actually a photo taken about a decade ago, when the actress had not yet reached the age of majority.
Additionally, Moriarty explained that the other image Kelly used to support her claims was simply the result of elaborate makeup that highlighted specific features.
“It’s appalling how completely misinformed, inaccurate and click-seeking those we follow and consider informed are.
On that day, I applied makeup with significant contouring, and I recall walking away, feeling quite attractive. Despite that, the day itself was incredibly stressful for me.
I ran up to those girls and showed up crying after what had happened that day and I left feeling better simply because I felt like they had reduced my lack of sleep and waved their magic wands. I saw the comments, scathing enough to disable them. But this is turning into harassment. This is becoming fake news.”
Moriarty’s decision to close her social media accounts is a step to protect herself from cyberbullying and preserve her mental well-being amid the controversy generated by the unfounded accusations.
This episode highlights the challenges public figures face in the digital world, where social media can become platforms to spread misinformation and fuel cyberbullying.
The closure of Moriarty’s accounts also highlights the importance of addressing responsibility and ethics in the dissemination of information, especially when it comes to the reputation and mental health of individuals.
