It’s been a few years since the season finale of Game of Thrones, the series that conquered the entire world and vindicated fantasy on the small screen.

Although time has passed and many fans have not reconciled themselves with the season finale (perhaps they never really will), the showrunners offer a new interview and talk about the only thing they would have liked to change about the series.

David Benioff and DB Weiss gave shape and meaning to Game of Thrones on the small screen.

They both took George RR Martin ‘s books and managed to produce a unique show that captured the attention of young and old.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Benioff talks about what he would have preferred to change in the television adaptation.

Without a doubt, this is an answer that will leave the most loyal fans of the series thinking:

It was a mistake not to bring back Mord the Jailer. We always talk about doing it.

Was it Brienne or The Hound? But we realized too late that Mord could have been the owner of the tavern.

We could have had that actor in the background acting exactly as he did as a jailer, except now as a small business owner. It was just such an obvious, obvious idea of the day after.

A closure full of cracks

The end of Game of Thrones generated a great deal of controversy and discontent among fans, mainly due to the perception that narrative quality and plot coherence decreased significantly in recent seasons.

As the series deviated from the source material provided by George R. R. Martin ‘s books , some viewers felt that the plot became rushed and that the story twists lacked the complexity and depth that characterized the early seasons.

Another major factor was the negative reaction towards character development choices, particularly Daenerys Targaryen’s arc.

After several seasons building Daenerys as a liberator and defender of the oppressed, her sudden transformation into an authoritarian and destructive figure in the final episodes was perceived by many as inconsistent with her previous character.

This discrepancy generated discontent among fans who had emotionally invested in the characters throughout the series.

Finally, the expectation generated for years by the popularity of Game of Thrones contributed to the magnitude of the disappointment.

Fans had speculated and anticipated the outcome of the series for a long time, creating high expectations that proved difficult to satisfy.

Together, these factors contributed to a mixed and, in some cases, negative reception of the Game of Thrones finale .

Benioff and Weiss went to Netflix to work on the adaptation of The Three-Body Problem, the excellent Chinese science fiction trilogy that will have its American television version.

The story begins during the Chinese Cultural Revolution and follows a physicist named Ye Wenjie, whose life is deeply affected by the political circumstances of the time.

As the narrative progresses in time, it becomes intertwined with the plot of a scientist named Wang Miao, who discovers unexplained phenomena while researching a video game.

The novel explores themes such as science, politics, history and the human response to a possible extraterrestrial threat, offering a complex and unique narrative that has won international recognition and numerous awards.

Can Benioff and Weiss redeem themselves after the controversial ending of Game of Thrones a few years ago?

They certainly missed the opportunity to be part of the Star Wars universe a while ago and were approached by Netflix to adapt another literary saga.

The Three Body Problem premieres on March 21.
