Godzilla: Minus one sparks speculation on the arrival of a sequel! – One of Toho’s executives talks about the plans they have in mind for the King of the Monsters.

The end of the year–2023– brought with it a double program with two of the most celebrated Japanese films of these twelve months: El Niño y La Garza – 100 and Godzilla: Minus One.
The second feature film, the most recent installment of the most famous radioactive reptile in cinema, has been an international phenomenon, but will there be a sequel? This is what we know about the franchise.
Should we wait for the Godzilla sequel?
In an interview with GQ Japan, Minami Ichikawa, producer and executive of The Toho Company, spoke about the challenge of making Godzilla Minus One , a delivery worthy of the furor that also caused Shin Godzilla in the middle of the last decade. Although he says that they undoubtedly have plans to continue producing titles about the reptile, but we will have to be patient because they are not going to rush just to have a box office success:
“We have had a ‘Godzilla Room’ as a division at Toho since 2019. Collectively we are considering the future of the character.
We’ve had animated Godzilla movies in the past, so we’re brainstorming ideas to expand his universe, including publishing, merchandise, and product collaborations.
However, I don’t feel the need to rush to the next live-action movie. Good films are due to quality. We want great ideas, a great script, a talented director and the right cast to work on it. Godzilla deserves that level.”
Directed by Takashi Yamazaki , Godzilla: Minus One is the tale of Koichi, a World War II veteran with post-traumatic stress who barely survives a first encounter with the kaiju, only to have to survive him once again when He arrives at the city of Ginza, ready to destroy it.
The film is set in the middle of the last century and sees a group of civilians attempt to stop the creature.
What does the ending of Godzilla: Minus One mean?
If you haven’t seen it yet, skip this paragraph because we will talk about spoilers.
Towards the end of the film, Koichi manages to blow up Godzilla with a plane bomb.
But the last shot of the film reveals that, as shown during one of his first appearances, the monster has an impressive regenerative ability.
And we see how, as he falls to the bottom of the sea, a piece of his flesh begins to restore itself. That is, Gojira will return to Japan sooner or later.
Critics have fallen in love with the Japanese title.
On the one hand, thanks to its surprising visual effects, which are even finalists for the Oscar in that category, and also due to the human drama and its concern to address the trauma that the war left its soldiers.
Thematically, the protagonist must deal with his survivor’s guilt and find a reason to keep going in the face of the looming threat of Godzilla.
Godzilla: Minus One is now in theaters. And it is a great option to close 2023 or start 2024 in theaters, especially if action is what you like.
Although Toho is not planning a sequel for now, fans of the kaiju will have little to wait, because in April Godzilla and Kong: The New Empire arrive.
The next installment of the Monster Verse where they will see him team up once again with the giant gorilla to save Earth from an even greater threat.
