The Barbie director already has a Best Director nomination for her work on Lady Bird in 2017, but according to Ferrera, her contribution to Barbie deserved similar recognition.

The Best Director category at the 2024 Oscars is made up of Justine Triet ( Anatomy of a Fall), Martin Scorsese ( Killers on the Moon), Christopher Nolan ( Oppenheimer), Yorgos Lanthimos ( Poors Creatures) and Jonathan Glazer ( Zone Of Interest ).

Greta has done pretty much everything a director could do to deserve it,” Ferrera said. “The creation of this world, taking something that had no inherent value to most people and making it a global phenomenon. It feels disappointing not to see it on that list.”

Ferrera also expressed her desire to see more films directed by women on the nomination list. “Female filmmakers telling all kinds of stories that resonate in different ways in culture is the goal.

I would love to see even more films directed by women on the list and for more directors to be recognized for making the best cinema of the year.”

The other big omission that Ferrera highlighted was the lack of a Best Actress nomination for Margot Robbie , who not only starred in Barbie but was also involved as a lead producer.

Although the film was nominated for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and twice for Best Song, Robbie’s performance did not receive the same recognition.

Ferrera praised the performance of Robbie, who played the role of a stereotypical Barbie, describing her as “truly incredible.” She highlighted Robbie’s ability to make the job look easy, although she assured that behind that apparent ease lies the masterful work of an accomplished actress.

“What Margot accomplished as an actress is truly incredible. ” Ferrera said. “Maybe people are fooled into thinking the job seems easy, but Margot is a magician as an actress in front of the screen.

She brings so much heart, humor, depth, joy and fun to the character. In my opinion, she is a master.”

The Barbie movie has been a long and exciting journey for the cast and crew, as Ferrera noted. The fantasy comedy, which has been described as balancing corporate fidelity and subversion, has achieved cultural phenomenon status, and the Oscar recognition is the culmination of years of work.

“It’s been many years on this ‘Barbie’ journey, even longer for Greta, Margot and [co-writer] Noah [Baumbach]. Everyone is really excited that we can celebrate and end this journey at the biggest party in the world.” year,” concluded Ferrera.

The omission of Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie in the directing and acting categories, respectively, has sparked debates in the film industry about the recognition of women both in front of and behind the camera. As the Oscar ceremony approaches, attention is turning to whether Barbie will be able to take home some of the most coveted statuettes.
