Superman: Legacy is one of the most anticipated films from Warner and DC, the promise of a great new beginning for the franchise but also a constant fear that things could go wrong. James Gunn, director of the project, feels very optimistic about the future and is gradually releasing new details about the film. Through networks, he makes a small preview about the status of the script, exciting fans with the prospect of tomorrow.
Gunn’s career in the film industry has spanned a variety of genres, from comedies to superhero films. Gunn gained recognition for directing and writing the cult horror-comedy film Slither in 2006, but achieved even greater fame by directing the Marvel Studios films Guardians of the Galaxy and its sequel Vol. 2. His distinctive approach and his ability to mix action, humor and emotion contributed to the success of both films, establishing Gunn as a prominent filmmaker in the superhero film industry.
However, in 2018, Disney fired Gunn from directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 due to controversial past tweets. Despite this, he was reinstated in 2019, and in addition to completing the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, Gunn expanded his involvement in the Marvel cinematic universe by directing The Suicide Squad, a film based on DC Comics characters. James Gunn continues to be an influential figure in the film industry, known for his unique style and his ability to revitalize franchises in innovative ways.
It was last year when Warner chose Gunn to be the president of DC Studios and direct the new direction of the cinematic universe. Warner trusted him and gave him the direction of Superman: Legacy, a dream that James is working hard on. Now, through Threads, the director confirms that the film’s script is 99.9% ready:
“I’m always changing little things, but basically it’s been done long before the strike.

Superman, created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in 1938, is a cultural icon who has left a lasting impact on society and pop culture. As the first superhero in comics, Superman established many of the tropes and archetypes that characterize this genre. His iconic symbol, the “S” on his chest, has become a universal emblem of hope and heroism. Over the years, Superman has appeared in a variety of media, from comics and television shows to films, becoming a global cultural phenomenon.
Superman’s influence extends beyond comics and film, permeating pop culture at large. His message of truth, justice and classic “save the day” has resonated with generations of fans, making him a symbol of aspiration and optimism. Superman has inspired countless people and influenced the creation of many other superheroes, contributing significantly to the way we understand and celebrate heroism in contemporary culture.
The DC Extended Universe (DCEU), the film franchise featuring iconic DC Comics characters, faced criticism since its first installments. The initial films, such as Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice were criticized for their dark tone and more sombre approach compared to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Problems with coherence in the narrative and uneven execution of characters were also noted. League of Justice received additional criticism for its uneven tone, a result of combining the visions of different directors.
However, there is hope to improve the quality of the DCEU. The release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League in 2021 allowed Zack Snyder to present the original vision of it, which found a more positive reception; Now James Gunn , as president of DC Studios, has a great opportunity to make a change. With greater attention to consistency in narrative, a diversity of tones to suit different characters, and careful choice of directors and writers, there is optimism among fans that DC can learn from its past criticisms and deliver more consistent and exciting in the future.
Superman: Legacy premieres on July 11, 2025.
