Five years after the premiere of Aquaman, the sequel comes not only to continue the epic story of the underwater superhero, but to serve as a farewell to the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), and as a farewell for Jason Momoa from the role of Aquaman.
After this film we will not see him again in the character’s skin.
However, it seems that there is still a future for him within DC, or so the co-president of DC Studios suggests.
Jason Momoa says that only fans will decide the future of the superhero in DC.
In October of last year it was announced that James Gunn and Peter Safran would be the new presidents of DC Studios, a division in charge of adaptations of DC Comics to film, television, and even video games.
This also meant that previous plans were changed, and it was decided that there was no longer a place for the DCEU. So Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom is the end of that ill-fated franchise.
Now that Jason Momoa is leaving the role of Aquaman behind. He may return in another role to DC, as has been rumored for months, but what we know for sure is very little.
What is a fact is that Peter Safran is confident that the actor will continue working with DC, and at Warner Bros.
He already has other projects such as the Minecraft movie. These were his words to Independent :
“We’ll see what happens with him further. I know Jason will always have a home at DC and at Warner Bros. In fact, his next movie is Minecraft.”
Jason Momoa and his time in DC
Since his debut in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) to his final appearance in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Momoa’s journey as Aquaman has been exciting and meaningful.
Jason Momoa was first introduced as Arthur Curry, also known as Aquaman, in a brief cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
His appearance was a revelation to fans, as he showcased a tougher, fresher version of the character compared to previous depictions of Aquaman in popular culture.
With his long hair, beard and tribal tattoos, Momoa brought a whole new image to the aquatic hero.
However, it was in Justice League (2017) where fans had the opportunity to learn more about Aquaman.
The film superficially explored his origin story and his connection to Atlantis, the underwater kingdom ruled by his brother Orm.
Momoa did a remarkable job of portraying Arthur Curry as a reluctant hero with a carefree attitude but a noble heart.
His charismatic performance and his chemistry with the other members of the Justice League, such as Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) and Ben Affleck (Batman), greatly contributed to the film’s appeal.
The big breakthrough for Jason Momoa and his character came with the solo film Aquaman (2018), directed by James Wan.
The film explored the story of Arthur Curry as he struggled to reconcile his human origins with his Atlantean heritage and his destiny as the true king of Atlantis.
Aquaman was a box office and critical success, largely thanks to Momoa’s charismatic performance and impressive underwater action sequences.
One of Momoa’s greatest strengths as Aquaman is his authenticity.
The actor has strongly identified with the character and has advocated for ocean sustainability in real life, using his platform to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the marine environment.
Jason Momoa ‘s role as Aquaman has left an indelible mark on the DCEU and popular culture in general.
His performance transformed Aquaman into one of DC Comics’ most iconic characters, and his charisma and authenticity have won the hearts of fans around the world.
Although the second installment of Aquaman is a farewell for the character, the actor could soon return in a new role within the DC Universe (DCU) of Peter Safran and James Gunn.
