It’s been a while since the premiere of The Continental: From the World of John Wick streaming, series that works as a spin-off for the film saga starring Keanu Reeves.
Ian McShane, one of the stars of the films, launches voracious criticism against the series, arguing that it is a cash grab (project, product or initiative that appears to be designed primarily with the objective of obtaining quick income or financial benefits) without sense.
It seems that the veteran actor is not satisfied with this production that portrays the youthful days of his character.
In the plot of the films, Winston is the manager of the Continental Hotel, the exclusive establishment for assassins that follows certain rules, such as the prohibition of murders within its facilities.
Winston plays a key role in maintaining order and enforcing the rules of the criminal underworld, serving as a complex character who balances his loyalty to John Wick with his duty to maintain the integrity of the hotel and the code that governs the assassins.
On the other hand, the plot of the series takes place in New York in the 1970s, where Winston Scott forms a team to counter a conspiracy triggered by his brother’s attack on the Continental.
This hotel is part of a global chain that acts as a neutral space for individuals from the criminal underworld.
The story, imbued with intense action drama, examines the intersection between family love, destiny, the thirst for revenge and the violent origins of the iconic assassin’s hotel in the John Wick universe.
Regarding what the Continental series means to Ian McShane , this is what he stated for Movie Web :
“I wouldn’t see it. I have no intentions, no one, I don’t think Keanu [Reeves] saw it, nor did Chad [Stahelski]. He had nothing to do with our films.
It’s just a matter of a television company cashing in on the series and taking the option to [stream?]. I’m afraid their arrogance in putting out the show is beyond me, so I wish them the best. I guess he came and went, right?”
The king of action today
The John Wick saga has left a significant impact on the action genre and the perception of revenge films.
The franchise has redefined the standards for combat scenes and choreography, featuring highly stylized and realistic action sequences that have been praised for their innovation and execution.
Keanu Reeves, in the lead role of John Wick, has also experienced a resurgence in his career, establishing himself as a contemporary action icon. The saga has influenced the way fight scenes are conceived and executed in film, setting a new standard for intensity and technical skill.
Additionally, the franchise has successfully expanded the character’s narrative universe, building an underground world of assassins with their own rules and codes.
This has built a loyal fan base and shown that there is a considerable appetite for complex, well-constructed action stories.
John Wick’s influence has permeated other media, inspiring video games, television shows, and films that seek to emulate his unique style and focus on technical excellence in the action genre.
Although the John Wick franchise has received widespread praise for its innovation in action sequences and Reeves ‘ performance , some negative criticism has focused on the plot and lack of character development.
Some argue that, despite the richness of the underground universe surrounding John Wick, the main narrative can be perceived as relatively simple and predictable, focused primarily on revenge and violence.
It has also been noted that, compared to the attention devoted to the impressive action scenes, the narrative and emotional elements could receive less emphasis, which could limit the depth of the cinematic experience for some viewers. Despite these criticisms, the franchise has maintained a loyal fan base and left a significant impact on the contemporary action genre.
