The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been an unprecedented phenomenon in the film industry, establishing itself as the highest-grossing franchise of all time.

Since its debut in 2008 with Iron Man, the MCU has captivated millions of viewers around the world, offering a rich interconnected narrative and exciting superhero adventures, but recently films like The Marvels have had a more than regrettable performance at the box office.

In the first three phases of the MCU, the franchise achieved unprecedented success at the box office.

Films like The Avengers, Avengers: Infinity War , and Avengers: Endgame became some of the biggest commercial successes in film history, grossing billions of dollars worldwide.

These films were not only acclaimed by audiences but also received critical acclaim for their innovative storytelling and cutting-edge visual effects.

However, the success of the MCU was not without box office failures. Movies like Hulk: The Incredible Man and Captain America: The First Avenger failed to reach the same heights as other installments of the franchise, obtaining more modest figures at the box office.

Despite these setbacks, the MCU continued to expand and evolve, introducing new characters and plots that maintained the interest of audiences around the world.

With the arrival of phases 4 and 5 of the MCU, the franchise faced new challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced the releases of several films to be delayed and adjusted.

Despite these obstacles, the MCU continued to be a success at the box office, with films such as Thor: Love and Thunder, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Spider-Man: No Way Home breaking fundraising records despite difficult circumstances.

What are the MCU’s worst failures in phases 4 and 5?

Not all films in phases 4 and 5 achieved the same level of success. Some installments fell short of the commercial expectations set by previous MCU installments and are now a stain on the franchise’s track record of success. Below we leave you the top 5 of the worst failures in phases 4 and 5 of the

MCU:

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania:

US $476 million

While this figure may seem significant, it is important to note that the film’s budget was estimated at around $200 million, making it a financial failure compared to other MCU productions.

Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings:

US $432.2 million

Another film that fell short of expectations in terms of box office receipts was Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Despite receiving praise from critics and audiences for its thrilling action and cultural representation, the film only managed to gross US$432,224,634 worldwide.

Although this figure exceeds the film’s budget (US$200 million), it is notable that it did not reach the same levels of success as other MCU films released during the same period.

Eternals:

US$$401.7 million

Eternals is also among the financial failures of the MCU in phases 4 and 5. Despite having a stellar cast and an interesting premise, the film only managed to gross US $401,731,759 at the box office.

With an estimated budget between US$200 and US$250 million, the film failed to generate the same enthusiasm among audiences as other installments of the franchise.

Black Widow:

US $379.7 million

Black Widow, centered on a popular MCU character, faced unique challenges due to its release during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although it grossed US$379million worldwide, its box office performance was affected by streaming availability through Disney+. It is estimated that the film had a budget of around US$200 million.

The Marvels:

US$ 205.8 million

Finally, The Marvels joins the list of MCU films that failed to achieve the expected financial success. Grossing US$205,873,824 worldwide, the film failed to generate the same interest as other installments in the franchise.

Although the exact budget of the film is not confirmed, The Numbers says that it was US$274 million, and therefore its poor performance at the box office places it as the biggest failure of the entire franchise.

Although these films may have disappointed in terms of box office receipts, it is important to remember that financial success is not always indicative of a film’s quality.

The MCU remains one of the most successful film franchises of all time, and these films continue to contribute to its rich history and legacy.
