Anticipation is building around the upcoming live-action adaptation of “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” and showrunner Albert Kim is revealing more details about the significant changes fans can expect compared to the original animated series.
In an interview with IGN, Kim offered an in-depth look at how they’re approaching the narrative and how certain key elements have been tweaked to put a fresh spin on the beloved story.
What other changes will the next Netflix series have?
One of the most notable changes is the focus on Aang’s main plot. In the animated series, Aang often embarks on various adventures and detours in his quest to master the elements.
However, Kim reveals that in the live-action adaptation, they have decided to give Aang a strong narrative drive from the beginning.
Basically, we give him this vision of what’s going to happen, and he says, ‘I have to get to the Northern Water Tribe to stop this from happening.’
This modification supposedly gives Aang a stronger narrative compulsion, eliminating the seemingly trivial detours that characterized the animated version.
Kim notes that this clarity in Aang’s direction from the beginning allows for a more structured and focused narrative. Instead of following a more relaxed approach, such as the quest to ride the koi elephant, the creators chose to set a more urgent and motivated tone from the beginning. Kim added, highlighting the difference in plot approach:
“That gives it a lot more narrative compulsion going forward, rather than ‘Let’s take a detour and go ride the koi elephant,’ that kind of thing.”
The showrunner also uses the metaphor that the series is a “remix, not a cover.”
This statement suggests that while certain elements and characters will remain faithful to the original series, there will also be significant expansion and exploration of the story.
Kim explains that they are taking the narrative from a two-dimensional format to a three-dimensional one, which means filling in some of the gaps and taking the story to new and exciting places.
In addition to the changes in Aang’s narrative, we can’t forget the recent news of Sokka’s character being desexed. In the animated series, Sokka often made sexist comments that have been the subject of discussion in fan communities.
In the live adaptation, it has been decided to eliminate this characteristic of the character to reflect a more modern and considered perspective.
This decision seeks to give Sokka a more up-to-date representation and remove elements that might not resonate well with contemporary audiences.
The showrunner, aware of the magnitude of assuming responsibility for such a beloved series, shared his reflections on the challenge that this project entails.
The live-action adaptation presents the monumental task of satisfying the millions of fans already enamored of the original series.
The series is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on February 22, 2024, with eight episodes that promise to take viewers to a completely new experience within the world of “Avatar: The Last Airbender.”
Fans will be watching to see how these changes will impact the core of the story as the series looks to captivate both new viewers and devoted fans of the animated series.
