Awards season is in full swing. December marks the beginning of the lists of the best of the year and the nominations for the different ceremonies that reward the most outstanding in the world of cinema.
In that sense, the list of the 20 finalists for Best Visual Effects, one of the most competitive categories of the Oscar, has been revealed. To everyone’s surprise, Oppenheimer was left out and the anticipated Godzilla: Minus One appeared there.
According to Variety , the voting rounds within the Hollywood Academy have already yielded 20 titles that are finalists for the Best Visual Effects category. We leave the complete list below, but the one that has been largely ignored seems to be Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan ‘s historical drama that the director insisted completely move away from digital effects to recreate nuclear weapons tests.
Other surprises, meanwhile, include Godzilla: Minus One, the new version of the classic giant Japanese monster that has conquered the box office and the public with its effects despite having a budget notably lower than the average Hollywood blockbuster. And speaking of them, despite being highly criticized during their launch, they are on the list Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels.

Barbie and Greta Gerwig ‘s commitment to creating a land that looked like a toy with practical effects and real sets seems to have paid off. Likewise, trust that Zack Snyder was going to be able to surprise with Rebel Moon , an original Netflix title that plans to dominate the platform during the holidays. The alien robots from Transformers: Rise of the Beasts are also in the race.
Likewise, the beloved Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse is among the finalists. Although it is an animated project, the stylized combination of techniques used for the different universes of the story have surprised both audiences and industry colleagues.
Notably, Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom also appear there, a film that has not yet been released to the public.
The list of finalists closes a year of great tension in the industry. Well, the crowded summer provided irregular results between one degree and another and gave workers studying these techniques the opportunity to raise their voices about the brutal working conditions that are required of them in a short time.
The support of the audiences, along with the strikes of scriptwriters and actors, gave them the impetus to organize and unionize.
Although there is still a long way to go before the Oscar nominations, which will be announced at the end of January, with this we can get an idea of which films are impressing and sounding among its members.
After all, while each branch votes for its category, members of all are invited to also vote for the Best Picture nominees. We will have to wait to see which are the lucky 5 that get to receive the mention.
