Although not everyone is convinced by a scene from Watchmen, The Watchers and the end of Sucker Punch: Surreal World, what cannot be denied about Zack Snyder ‘s films is that there is no shortage of female heroines. From the protagonist of Dawn of the Dead to Wonder Woman herself in her version of Justice League, the director has been concerned with bringing female characters with agency to the screen. And that continues with Rebel Moon according to Sofia Boutella , the actress in charge of starring in his new film.
Who is Sofia Boutella in Rebel Moon?
At a press conference in Mexico City, Sofia Boutella was asked about the importance of female characters in space epics. Her response was very clear: Rebel Moon treats with care and complexity Kora, the young rebel who will seek to save her planet from the iron fist of a voracious galactic empire. And it is precisely because of Zack Snyder ‘s view that role is elevated:
“I am going to perform a leading role first time having nothing for preparation. And what an honor to do it with Zack. But I think this movie is important because of that factor and Zack did it in such a way that he elevates women, he empowers women and in a way that was especially needed in this genre. And that I don’t remember having seen, or if I saw it I observed it in glimpses, and never completely committed to the strength, power, capacity and mental complexity of a woman. That honors me and I hope it translates to many women, and men too.”
Although we can tell you little about Rebel Moon , once you see it it will be clear to you what we are talking about. There is more to Kora than meets the eye at the beginning of the film, and fortunately, she is not the only female warrior we will see take up arms against the oppressive regime of the Homeworld. For those of you fascinated by Snyder’s style, be ready to see Boutella kicking ass in all her signature slow-motion glory.
But he began his intervention during the press conference by talking about the great challenge it represented for him to come up with an entire cosmic mythology for the film. That, he assures, has been the greatest effort of this delivery, because unlike his previous work, it is one that he had to propose entirely from his imagination.
Remember that Rebel Moon is divided into two parts, because the filming of more than 150 days ended up making two films. The first of them, subtitled The Girl of Fire, will arrive on Netflix starting November 22. And the second will do so until mid-April.
Will Snyder finally be able to find a franchise to develop and will the platform find a story that will ensure subscribers for years?
