Saturn Awards: Blue Beetle and The Flash are nominated for Best Superhero Movie – the DC films achieved the mention along with three Marvel titles in that same category.

Despite everything, the scandals, the memes and the box office results, Blue Beetle and The Flash have achieved an important nomination within the geek world.

The Saturn Awards, which are responsible for celebrating the best in science fiction and fantasy cinema, television and literature, announced their nominations. In the category of Best Superhero Movie, they included both DC projects that stumbled this year in their releases.

Which are the nominees for Best Superhero Movie at the Saturn Awards?

According to Deadline, the Saturn Awards are preparing to hand out their awards in the coming weeks. Although the ceremony celebrates different media, they obviously couldn’t leave cinema aside.

And with all the discussions happening in 2023 about whether or not people are tired of superheroes, it’s interesting to review their specific category for this genre. And in doing so, we will find two of the most recent box office failures from Warner and DC: Blue Beetle and The Flash.

Along with these two titles, we also have the divisive Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, for the best received Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which was nominated due to the period taken into consideration for these awards.

Really, the only one that was left out was Shazam! The Fury of the Gods, which also did not cause much fury among the public.

In the case of The Flash, and without considering all the scandals over aggressive behavior by Ezra Miller, the film was severely criticized for its abuse of nostalgia and for the quality of the computer-generated images that reached movie theaters.

Despite a strong marketing campaign, the film failed to even recover its investment taking into account advertising costs and is considered one of the worst failures of the year.

With Blue Beetle, the story is somewhat different. Although critics were much kinder to this story, the character did not really appear previously in the franchise, which did not give much impetus to present him on his own as a protagonist.

It was one of the first projects affected by the lack of promotion by part of the cast because of the writers’ strike.

Although with minor losses, due to its smaller budget, it did not give very enthusiastic numbers either.

The DCEU franchise, which is about to be rebooted under the creative direction of James Gunn , will conclude with Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom , which will premiere on December 20.

Unlike its predecessors this year, the promotion has been almost non-existent and has not even had any favorable comments from the new co-president of the saga. The bet, it seems, will be to let the film speak for itself.

Really the only exception of the year, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 seems to be the audience’s favorite in terms of superheroes.

It remains to be seen if the Saturn Awards, which will be announced at the beginning of February, end up proving them right. The film, directed by Gunn, is already on Disney Plus in case you want to watch it again while the DC titles are now available on HBO Max.
