The world of horror films is full of surprises, and this time the news that has shaken fans of the genre is the resignation of director Christopher Landon from directing Scream 7.
The news came with a shocking statement from the filmmaker on his X account, where he revealed the reasons behind his decision.
This is a blow to fans of the Scream saga, who had been eager to see what direction the franchise would take in this seventh installment.
The saga had experienced a resurgence with the fifth film, directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett , which became a box office hit.
However, after scheduling conflicts, these directors decided not to return for the next installment and would remain as producers.
The choice of Christopher Landon , known for his work in films such as Freaky: This Body Is Out to Kill and Happy Death Day, generated expectations among followers of the genre.
However, since his participation in Scream 7 was announced, the project has been plagued with various problems.
One of the first obstacles was the firing of the lead actress, Melissa Barrera, who had played Samantha Carpenter in the fifth Scream film.
Her departure came after Barrera posted messages on social media that were interpreted as anti-Semitic.
Spyglass Media, the company behind the film, made it clear that it would not tolerate anti-Semitism or hate speech in any form.
Barrera’s departure was followed by the resignation of Jenna Ortega , who played Tara in the Scream films.
Initially, she had been reported that her absence was due to scheduling conflicts due to her participation in the Netflix series Merlina, but it was later revealed that Ortega was looking for a substantial salary increase, something the production company did not accept.
These events have left Scream 7 in a state of uncertainty.
Fans are wondering who will take the reins of the film and what the fate of the franchise will be in this new installment.
Through X, this is what the director expressed:
“I guess now is a good time to announce that I formally left Scream 7 weeks ago. This will disappoint some and delight others. It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart broke for everyone involved. All. But it’s time to move on. I have nothing more to add to the conversation other than I hope Wes’s legacy thrives and rises above the noise of a divided world.
What he and Kevin created is something amazing and I was honored to have even a brief moment basking in the brilliance of it.”
Fans of the franchise will have to wait to see how this nightmare is resolved and if the film will finally make it to the big screen.
If there is still a future for this saga, we will know soon, but at this precise moment things are not looking good for the seventh film.
If a reboot is attempted, it is likely that it will not be successful, so careful steps must be taken before making a decision.
