Why Netflix did not pay winner of ‘The Squid Game’ reality show even after one-year
Why Netflix did not pay winner of ‘The Squid Game’ reality show even after one-year – ‘The Squid Game’ stood out for its capitalist criticism and its fierce look at the society of spectacle… Or so we would like to think, because its enormous success on Netflix ended up turning everything around.

The best example of the failure of social denunciation of the Korean series is in the form of a reality show of the same name that Netflix itself has carried out. Of course, we have to admit to the platform that, at least, they respected the character of the fictional reality show when it came to carrying it out in reality.
What if heat waves, what if the contestants used condoms to combat the cold … On the lips, don’t be wrong. It’s a bit like Oppenheimer’s promotion dropped an atomic bomb on Japan to promote the film’s release.
Here, yes, it seems that no one has died. But the problem is that no one has been paid either. And that, taking into account how the desperate 456 contestants have had it, is quite ugly.
The final episode aired earlier this week on the platform, but it has been recorded for quite some time longer. However, player 287, Mai Whelan, is still hoping to collect the $4.56 million prize.
In an interview with The Times, Whelan revealed that he has not received the money, even though filming of the reality show ended at the beginning of the year and, with the broadcast, there is no longer even a risk of leaks.
I feel like Tom Cruise in ‘Jerry Maguire’. “Show Me the Money!”
She also stressed that, taking into account that income, she spent good money on a designer dress precisely for a Netflix event.
We hope they pay him quickly, something that at least they did well in the fictional reality show.
In the final episode Mai faced Sam (player 16) and Phill (player 451). The truth is that, although according to these words she has not yet received the award, in said battle she achieved what is until now the highest cash prize in the history of reality shows. This is what she said after achieving it what, for her, was months ago:
“Today simply validates that anything is possible. Even when you feel down and scared, you have to get up, be a strong person and focus.”
Beyond designer dresses for special events (the price of fame), Mai had this to say when asked what her award meant. Speaking about what she planned to do with the prize money once she receives it, she added that she wanted to remember the importance of charitable causes.
In statements to PA, the winner stated, without specifying too much, that she was going to donate (or at least part of it) to charitable causes.
This is good because I would like to give a voice to my cause, that is the main reason I joined the game, to help a cause, so now that I have won I have a platform to tell the world to help the underprivileged.
Educate the children and ensure that the elderly are taken care of because, when you are in a poor country, the children do not have an education and neither does anyone have medical care.
Netflix, for its part, has already confirmed that the reality show ‘The Squid Game’ has been a success and that we will see new editions in the future.
We hope that they do not make them more realistic and that, in fact, the contestants are taken more and better care of. No one should spend it in exchange for fighting for money to benefit a show.
As we know, despite everything, those four and a half million dollars are very tempting. We leave you the Netflix announcement of the second edition. It is accompanied by a link to apply to participate and be part of the next 456 contestants. There you…
