Michael Mann declares himself a fan of Guardians of the Galaxy – The award-winning filmmaker praised the MCU saga, challenging generic criticism of superheroes.

In an industry where it has become fashionable for award-winning directors to criticize superhero films. Michael Mann’s nuanced perspective is a breath of fresh air in an environment commonly rarified by these disagreements.

Without falling into generic disqualifications, the conciliatory vision of the director of The Last of the Mohicans recognize the narrative skill of certain films of the genre, although this is a territory that they are not willing to explore.

In a recent episode of The Playlist ‘s The Discourse podcast, the legendary filmmaker shared insights about his next project, Ferrari and their opinions on the superhero genre, particularly from the giant, Marvel Studios.

Although his award-winning filmography is far from being associated with the world of superheroes, his favorable opinion of the Guardians of the Galaxy saga adds to the ongoing public debate about the artistic merit of superhero films.

Mann, a director who has consistently chosen projects that resonate with him on a deep level, spoke about his filmmaking philosophy, stating, “I only make movies that I’m passionate about and that put me a little more on the edge… That’s where I do my best.” “I would like to be a traveling director, going from film to film, but I don’t think I’d be very good at that.”

Gender stereotypes are broken in tastes

While he admitted that routine doesn’t fuel his creativity, Mann was quick to emphasize that his distaste for superhero movies doesn’t come from a fundamental dislike for the genre.

His surprising appreciation for the creation of now DC Films head James Gunn challenges the notion that all auteur filmmakers dismiss Marvel films.

I think Guardians of the Galaxy, for example, not necessarily the last one, but the previous two, have really worked and I love watching them. And the reason they work is because they have a really well-done story structure behind them.

So it’s exciting in the sense of being able to expand into the myth in that way and create [a new] myth. I think it is a very interesting medium.

Let’s not say something I want to do. I want to do a science fiction project, but not about superheroes.

This stance is more open to the superhero genre than one might expect from a director of his caliber. Although for many this opinion, especially at this point in the superhero genre, could be obvious, the truth is that this validation is still necessary.

And not because the millions of dollars raised by Marvel and DC need it, but to clarify, once again, that pop culture is, in fact, culture.

The return of the best Mann

While fans of the hooded heroes could speculate about the possibility of directors of Mann’s importance directing a Marvel project, he himself has made it clear that a film like Avengers: Secret Wars is not in his plans.

Instead, Mann hinted that the Fire vs. Fire sequel is something he’s really looking forward to, a project that has garnered a lot of attention and anticipation from fans of the original film.

At the moment, it’s Ferrari, the film is preparing for its premiere on December 25, which already has its own expectations and nominations are expected for its protagonist, Adam Driver.

While Mann may not be donning a cape anytime soon, the recognition of his merits within the superhero landscape challenges preconceived notions and highlights the evolving nature of cinematic storytelling.
