There is still a month and a half until the premiere of Dune Part 2, but Denis Villeneuve is already contemplating the future.
The acclaimed director has previously discussed the possibility of adapting “Dune Messiah,” the third book in the literary saga, into another film.
The latest revelation is that, for him, the ideal scenario would be for this to serve as the final installment in the film franchise.
How many Dune movies will there be?
In an interview with Time magazine, Denis Villeneuve explained that Dune 3 could potentially mark the end of his involvement in the science fiction franchise.
He stated, “Dune Messiah should be the last film in the saga for me.” Just last month, he confirmed that he was working on the script but emphasized the need for further development.
The challenge here lies in the fact that the studio has not yet given the green light for Dune 3. The films have been collaborative efforts between Legendary Studios and Warner Bros. Discovery.
Notably, Dune was produced without an official commitment to the second part, even though the ending leaves the story open-ended.
Villeneuve must have significant confidence to have commenced work on the third screenplay without an official go-ahead.
What is Dune 3 going to be about?
Before delving into the plot details, a spoiler warning is warranted. If you wish to avoid spoilers, please skip this paragraph.
Following the storyline of the novel “Dune Messiah,” the film is expected to chronicle the reign of Emperor Paul, starting just over ten years after he assumed the throne following his marriage to Princess Irulan at the end of the first book.
The narrative will involve his encounters with a series of religious revolts.
Could a third installment be approved?
Certainly. It’s crucial to remember that Dune faced challenges due to the pandemic. Initially delayed because of lockdowns, the film later had a simultaneous release on HBO Max and in theaters.
Despite not achieving stellar box office numbers, the excitement it generated was sufficient for the production companies to decide to continue with the franchise.
This implies that the success of Dune: Part Two as a blockbuster is pivotal.
Primarily due to the significant budget involving filming in the Jordanian desert, a star-studded cast led by Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, and substantial digital effects.
Yet, pursuing another installment could be riskier than assured if the second film doesn’t achieve success.
Only time, along with the audience’s passion, will reveal whether Dune Part 2 will emerge as the first major hit of 2024.
The film is set to premiere on March 15 and will be one of the initial blockbusters testing its fortunes at the box office.
So, if a trilogy is desired, enthusiasts should promptly gather family and friends for a cinematic experience.
