In a surprising turn of events, actress Gina Carano has announced plans to sue Disney and Lucasfilm for discrimination and wrongful termination.
What makes this case even more intriguing is the financial backing she will receive from Elon Musk, the technology magnate behind companies like Tesla and SpaceX.
This unusual alliance between a Hollywood actress and a technology entrepreneur poses a new dynamic in the fight for influence over the entertainment industry.
Why will Gina Carano sue Disney?
The controversy surrounding Gina Carano dates back to early 2021 when a series of posts on her social media triggered a strong backlash and, ultimately, her abrupt dismissal from the hit Disney+ series, ‘The Mandalorian.
Among the posts that sparked controversy were comments on sensitive political and social issues, including questions about the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines and unfounded accusations of voter fraud during the 2020 US presidential election.
However, it was a post in which Carano compared being a Republican today to being Jewish during the Holocaust that led to her firing.

Despite criticism and pressure online, Carano stood firm in her stances, defending her right to freedom of expression. However, her posts led to a loss of support from both fans and the entertainment industry.
The agency that represented her, United Talent Artists, also terminated her contract, leaving Carano in a vulnerable position in the industry.
Elon Musk will finance Gina Carano vs. lawsuit Disney.
In a move that has surprised many, Elon Musk has announced (via The Hollywood Reporter) that he will provide financial support for Gina Carano‘s lawsuit against Disney and Lucasfilm.
Through his company X Corp, Musk is committed to legally supporting those who believe they have been discriminated against due to his activity on online platforms.
This financial backing of Carano is seen by some as an attempt by Musk to position himself as an advocate for free speech at a time when technology companies are coming under fire for their role in moderating online content.
Carano‘s lawsuit, filed in federal court in California, alleges that she was fired for expressing right-wing opinions on social media and seeks a court order forcing Lucasfilm to reinstate her.
The lawsuit also claims that Carano was harassed and defamed for refusing to conform to Disney and Lucasfilm‘s views on issues related to Black Lives Matter, preferred pronouns, and baseless claims of election interference.
Through X (formerly Twitter), the actress shared the following:
After my 20 years of building a career from scratch, and during former Disney CEO Bob Chapek‘s regime, Lucasfilm made this statement on Twitter, bidding farewell to ‘The Mandalorian‘: ‘Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there is no plans for her will be in the future.
However, her social media posts denigrating people for their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.‘ […] I never even used aggressive language.
I shared thought-provoking quotes, images, memes, and occasionally used my own words, not with aggression but with respect and some occasional comedy to keep the mood light in dark times.”
