The series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power continues to generate expectations and even more controversies among fans of JRR Tolkien’s work, as it has been revealed that the second season will include a significant addition to the canon: the introduction of a new wizard.

This news has reignited the fiery debates about the alterations to the original work that the first season provoked.

According to the fan account Fellowship of Fans, in charge of disseminating information about the series, in the second season of The Rings of Power, the mysterious character known as “The Stranger” (whom we already know is Gandalf) will meet a new wizard during his journey to the East.

Who is the magician who will appear in the second season of The Rings of Power?

This mage will play a crucial role in the training and development of “The Stranger’s” abilities, turning him into a considerably powerful being.

However, the identity of this magician and his role in the story have not yet been revealed.

The most striking thing about this revelation is that this journey to the East by Gandalf (although it has not been confirmed by name, it is very obvious who he is) and the other wizard does not appear in any of Tolkien’s works and appears to be an exclusive creation of the Amazon Prime Video series.

This decision has generated concern among some purist followers of Tolkien’s work, who fear that these alterations could deviate too much from the spirit and coherence of the universe created by the author.

The fan account also shared that, to properly depict this journey to the East and introduce the new wizard, Amazon has obtained special permission from the Tolkien State to access two texts outside of the Appendices.

One of these texts comes from Unfinished Tales, suggesting that the new wizard could be related to the order of wizards in Middle-earth known as the Istari.

Additionally, Tolkien mentions in one of these texts that some of the Istari were present in the Second Age and traveled east, providing a justification within the fictional universe for the inclusion of this new character.

Information from the Fellowship of Fans on X also highlights that “The Stranger” is being developed as a major rival and future enemy of Sauron in the series’ upcoming seasons.

This season will be crucial for his development, as he will learn and hone his skills under the guidance of the new wizard.

These revelations are sure to divide the fan community, with some excited by the new additions and others concerned about deviations from the source material.

With the second season on the way, it remains to be seen how these new plots will develop and how they will affect the overall perception of the series among Tolkien fans.”
