Unraveling Loki’s finale: director spills secrets

Since Tom Hiddleston appeared in Thor, Loki became one of the most beloved characters by the public and although at the beginning he was considered a villain, his objectives were not as dark as everyone believed and the company found new ways to play with its ambiguity and its path to redemption. That’s why the end of the second season of Loki was so moving, although one of its directors has just revealed that the original idea was very different.

After taking a new path in Thor: Ragnarok, the company knew that the character of Loki had to be sacrificed in Avengers: Infinity War to help the narrative evolution of Thor ( Chris Hemsworth ), but it also knew that The fans would not be happy with the decision at all. Loki has “died” at different times in the franchise, but in the confrontation against Thanos his death had to be real and definitive to advance the plot. Luckily, by introducing time travel in Avengers: Endgame a way was found to continue working with it.

In this film we see how Loki escapes during the events of The Avengers with a resolution that would come with his own solo series exclusively for Disney Plus. Loki was one of the most important titles to open this new stage, since the production company wanted to start connecting films with works in this format and the first tests were quite successful. During the first season, Loki learns that he may be more than he believes and that perhaps his destiny is not as set on the path of failure and evil as he always thought.

What is the second season of ‘Loki’ about?
After Sylvie ( Sophia Di Martino ) killed one of the versions of Kang ( Jonathan Majors ) to fulfill her revenge, Loki finds himself in the past and discovers that he suffers from an alteration that forces him to travel to different temporalities without remedy. This small problem does not prevent him from meeting with Mobius ( Owen Wilson ) and B-15 ( Wunmi Mosaku ) to try to understand the damage that the TVA caused, but also the dangers of multiversal collapse due to the constant birth of new timelines that put reality itself in danger.

The original ending of ‘Loki’ was very different
At the end of the series, Loki learns to master his ability to travel through time and spends hundreds of years trying to decipher the best way to save the universe, so he does different tests to achieve his goal; However, after many attempts he realizes that there is no simple solution to the problem and he must make a tough decision if he wants to save his friends, even if that means not being able to be with them. The season closes with Loki becoming the God of Stories who takes control of all the timelines that exist and will exist in order to give people genuine freedom.

It is a rather bittersweet act of sacrifice, as Loki did not want to be alone, but it is exactly how it ends to fulfill a greater good. The ending was praised by critics and fans, but, curiously, the original idea was very different.

In the Marvel Studios Assembled: The Making of Loki Season 2 special (via ComicBook ), director Aaron Moorhead revealed: There was a draft of the script for the ending, the mere ending. Something didn’t quite convince both of us about it. And the problem was that this draft didn’t have Loki destroying the Loom. He saved the Loom from implosion and then ascended to the throne. There was a collective awareness of unfolding events, yet the precise nature remained elusive. It seemed that efforts were underway to preserve the institution, secure the throne, and navigate various complexities.

After much analysis, Moorhead and Justin Benson realized that Loki needed to make a bigger sacrifice in order to close his story and all the pieces finally fell into place:

The inquiry that surfaced revolved around the decision not to disassemble the Loom, thereby assuming the significant responsibilities associated with it. The decision to undertake this immense responsibility without personal gain appears, in hindsight, unquestionably judicious. But that was a defining moment in his development, when we realized that Loki needed to destroy and become the Loki.

Although Tom Hiddleston will always be willing to return as Loki because he loves the character and changed his career, he considers the end of the series the definitive closure of his story. Despite this, many fans are sure that the complicated god will return in one form or another and there are many rumors about a possible cameo in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars , as the TVA is now looking for Kang variants and Loki knows that the threat persists across the multiverse.
