His actions not only shocked the world but also highlighted the dangers lurking on the hippie trail in Southeast Asia.
Discover who he was, and the sinister path that led him to commit such heinous acts.
Meet Charles
This person’s name was Charles. At first, he starts robbing people and begins various types of thefts. One day, he goes from France to Thailand with his girlfriend. He travels to Thailand to scam Western tourists there.
A Deadly Game in Thailand
After reaching Thailand, he befriends tourists, sits and eats with them, and secretly mixes drugs and medicines in their food and drink, after which they lose consciousness, and he escapes with their valuable items, meaning passport, cash, jewelry, or other things.
In Thailand, he very cleverly befriends an American woman and also mixes drugs and medicines in her food and drink, which causes her to lose consciousness.
He steals her valuable items too. Well, if it had stopped here, it would have been fine, but he thinks that just stealing her valuable items is not enough.
An extremely sinful thought comes to his mind, and he picks up the American woman and throws her into a nearby river. This was the first incident of throwing the American woman, which marked the beginning of his heinous crimes.
After that, he meets another tourist, sits with him, chats, and makes him unconscious by mixing drugs and medicines in his food and drink. Here too, he doesn’t stop at just making him unconscious, but to satisfy himself, he burns his body.
And he leaves him burning by the roadside. When the girlfriend of the person who was burned alive finds out that he is not in his room, she goes to Charles and tells him that she has some questions to ask him because that woman knew that the tourist had gone out to eat and drink with him.
He was so cunning that during the question and answer session, he mixes drugs and medicines in that woman’s food and drink too and throws her into the river to drown, just like the first woman.
A Life of Luxury Built on Crimes
After robbing these three people, meaning two women and one man, he had accumulated a good amount of money and was living a very luxurious life.
But because his mind thought in terms of crime, he thinks that people might start recognizing him because all the tourists around him were disappearing, so he thinks he should go to some far-off place.
opens up even after reaching Nepal. There, he befriends a Canadian man and an American woman. His method of operation was the same, and he sends both of them from this world to the next.
First, he repeatedly strikes their bodies with a sharp tool, and then he burns them alive. Temporarily, there’s no hue and cry about these two incidents in Nepal, even though two people had lost their lives. But later, this matter becomes very serious, while on the other hand, the killer and his girlfriend return to Thailand after stealing their belongings.
Then he doesn’t stay in that country either and flees to India.
Journey of Charles Sobhraj, The Serial Killer
Even after reaching India, he keeps his world of crime alive and there too, he sends a tourist from this world to the next. He didn’t change his method of operation – the same mixing of drugs and medicines in people’s food.
He also uses the passport of this murdered tourist and travels from India to Singapore, then from Singapore back to India, and from India, he even travels to Thailand.
That is, looking at his deeds, you can say that whoever was close to this person was not safe from his criminal mentality and would have to depart from this world.
Once, an incident also occurs where he wants to rob a person and mixes drugs and medicines in his food, but the mixture of these medicines is slightly more than intended, which causes that person to depart from this world instead of becoming unconscious.
He even sends one of his friends who had helped him in the world of crime from this world to the next.
In this regard, it is known that he killed this friend as they had an argument on some issue.
A Failed Attempt
When he returns to India from Thailand once again, a very heinous kind of idea comes to his mind. That idea was that he plans why not rob a large group of people together because he thinks that if drugs and medicines can work on one person, they can work on more people too. He decides to rob a group of 60 people.
These 60 people were French engineering students whom this killer had met in New Delhi.
And he brings water bottles for all these people, and in reality, he had mixed drugs and medicines in these water bottles.
As soon as he distributes the water bottles among the people, whoever drinks the water starts to lose consciousness immediately. But this time, it seemed like luck would not be on his side because while distributing the water bottles, it takes him so long that during this time, a person who had used his drugged water regains consciousness after fainting.
Gradually, the other students also start regaining consciousness, and they ask him what he had mixed in the water bottles. They immediately call the police to the scene, and seeing the condition of the students, the police take him into custody.
The police investigate Charles and he is presented before the court, where he is sentenced to 12 years in prison on charges of giving intoxicating drugs to the students. The police also charge him with murders that occurred in the past in India, and he is confident that he will receive a severe punishment for this, but Charles escapes this punishment because there is no solid evidence against him.
A Narrow Escape
When Charles was serving his sentence in jail, posters were put up against him in Thailand at that time, and he is accused of being involved in the incidents of taking many people’s lives there.
The Thai government wanted that as soon as Charles completed his sentence, he should be immediately brought back from India to Thailand, where he could be sentenced to death in light of serious allegations. Charles became aware of these circumstances and in no way wanted to return to Thailand where he could be sentenced to death.
Therefore, he plans how he can stay in the Indian jail for as long as possible so that he can keep himself safe.
As he was an expert in adulterating people’s food and drink, he tries the same trick in jail and gives some candies mixed with drugs and medicines to the Indian jail guards.
The guards lose consciousness after eating the candies, and Charles, taking advantage of their unconsciousness, comes out of the jail in such a way that the jail authorities think he made the guards unconscious so that he could escape from jail.
In light of these allegations, he is once again presented before the Indian court, where the court sentences him to 10 years in prison. That is, after this sentence, he had to spend 22 years in the Indian court, and in Thailand, if 20 years had passed for any crime according to the law of that time, the accused could not be tried.
How clever and cunning a criminal he was that he manages to protect himself from the punishment to be given in Thailand in this way. That is, he committed crimes and also saved his life.
Charles spends several years in Indian jail and after completing his sentence, when he comes out of jail, there was no crime against him now that could be tried in Thailand because more than 20 years had passed. He was now over 50 years old.
A Twist of Fate
More than six years have passed since he came out of jail, and one day he decides why not go for a short visit to Nepal. This was the same country where 30 years ago, Charles had sent a Canadian man and an American woman from this world to the next before robbing them.
Unlike Thailand, there was no such restriction in Nepal that after a certain period of time, it would not take steps to punish a criminal for murder. Going to Nepal proves very costly for him because the police arrest him on these criminal charges and he is presented before the court, where the court sentences him to 20 years in prison.
He is released after completing his sentence in jail.
Instead of being ashamed of his actions, he made a film about his life and wrote a book, the rights of which he sold for 15 million dollars.
He was a serial killer who is now living the life of a free man. Despite all the serious crimes, he is the owner of millions of dollars.
