Without a doubt, Barbie is one of the most important films of 2023, because in addition to being one of the strongest premieres of the year, it also represented a change for viewers who were tired of the same old franchises.
The adaptation managed to convince the majority of the public and even promoted a very special cultural movement. Although it is impossible to imagine the doll in the hands of other creators, a long time ago the project was worked on for Anne Hathaway, who today is very grateful that the proposal will not work.
Anne Hathaway as Barbie?
Thanks to Margot Robbie’s great work as Barbie and her commitment as a producer to finding the best director available for the project. It’s hard to imagine anyone else as the famous doll, but the idea was passed around Hollywood for several years before falling into the hands of Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach.
Mattel worked for years to bring their most prized toy to the big screen, but they had a series of guidelines they wanted to follow to respect their brand and the doll’s specific legacy.
In 2016, Amy Schumer took the lead role, although she admits that it was clear from the beginning that she couldn’t work the version she had in mind, so it didn’t take long for her to jump ship.
Months later, the project gained new life when it was announced that Anne Hathaway would play Barbie.
In addition to the actress, the other point of interest was that the film would be directed by Alethea Jones, best known for Fun Mom Dinner. The public received this news well. Sony lost the rights and Warner Bros acquired them looking for a new creative team.
The idea caught the attention of Robbie, who approached Warner Bros. executives to propose herself as a producer, and since they considered that she was also perfect for the main role, both came out of that meeting a winner.
The actress sought out the director of Little Women and Lady Bird because she knew she would have a great idea with the doll, and that is how Gerwig worked on a proposal so interesting that the company could not refuse and it led to great success. of the tape.
Anne Hathaway Is Grateful Her ‘Barbie’ Version Failed
Despite the huge success that Barbie turned out to be, Anne Hathaway knows that it’s all down to Robbie and Gerwig, and that’s why she doesn’t regret that her version of the movie never saw the light of day.
During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast (via Variety ), the actress explained:
“It was lucky [that it never happened]. [The Barbie team] hit the mark.
“As a film buff and as a woman in Hollywood since I was a child, I am delighted with the development. If I believed that the version I was committed to could have done that, yes, I might feel differently about it, but I really think her [movie] is the best possible version. I am also a person who loves to see women achieve it.
I just do it, I just love it. And also, doing it so well, so undeniably that they had to name new records, come on! …I think it will probably make things better.”
The actress also took the opportunity to praise Robbie on her path as a producer:
“Margot is simply sublime, period. What she is doing as a creative person and producer is very exciting and inspiring. And the mythical giants that they toppled [with Barbie] that have maintained certain narratives that have not allowed opportunities to develop for so many people.
They ran through them, dancing, shining!”
Barbie was one of the most important box office hits of 2023, and now fans are paying attention to find out if the Academy will take her into account for their next Oscar nominations. Beyond the technical part that is very well mastered, but not. It would be nothing if it weren’t for the great work of the protagonists and Gerwig as creator.
