Golden Globes 2024: Poor Creatures wins Best Motion Picture, Comedy, Musical – Yorgos Lanthimos’ new film has caused a sensation since it debuted at the last Venice Film Festival, and Stones’ performance has caused a stir.

Not all the pink fury over Barbie could against Yorgos Lanthimos’s feminist Frankenstein.
The Golden Globes ceremony, or rather its voters, decided to bet on Emma Stone ‘s performance in the most radical and shameless female story, Poor Things, whose performer has clinched the best actress award in a musical or comedy movie.
Stone’s victory is preceded by the triumph of its director, the Greek Yorgos Lanthimos, who took the Golden Lion for Best Film at the last Venice Festival.
It is since then that this feature film has begun its journey through the awards season and the momentum, despite a summer and autumn agitated by strikes and crestfallen box offices, remained strong as its Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical clearly indicates.
What is Poor Creatures about?
The film is the story of Bella Baxter ( Emma Stone ), a woman who is brought to life by a scientist who uses the body of a deceased suicide and implants her baby’s brain.
As shady as that sounds, and given that it is correctly a black comedy, despite being the story of an uninhibited woman discovering sex, love and life, it has a couple of sweet moments. Stone was in charge of bringing it to life.
That Emma won the award in the comedy category is not in. The film uses the dry sense of humor, which characterizes Lanthimos’ work, precisely to mock the arbitrary social restrictions that female sexuality has in society.
The bewilderment and honesty with which Bella faces double standards gives rise to many comic moments throughout the story.
Notably, she was chosen over Barbie , her real competition in that category.
Although Greta Gerwig ‘s film is also a feminist story, which seeks to expose gender inequality from the reverse that is Barbieland, it is much less confrontational and towards the end it dilutes its satire of sexism in favor of a kind of coming of age for the titular doll played by Margot Robbie.
Although the Golden Globes have a much smaller voting body than other film institutions that will soon be handing out awards, they can certainly be thought of as the first sample of what the industry liked most about last year.
It would be too early to say that Poor Things will be a darling of the Oscars, which announce their nominations at the end of the month, but everything indicates that it will undoubtedly be present for its scandalous premise.
Unfortunately, as is the case with several of the titles that were in competition at the 2024 Golden Globes, Poor Things is not yet in theaters and will not be released until January 25 (conveniently a couple of days after the Oscar nominations).
So if all this has made you more interested in seeing the movie, stay tuned because at the end of the month you will be able to do it only in theaters.
