James Gunn confesses how House of Dragon influenced his choice for Supergirl. Gunn explained that Alcock’s casting was something he envisioned for more than a year, even before reading the comics.

James Gunn revealed the reasons behind the choice of Milly Alcock as the next Supergirl in the ambitious project Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which seeks to give a new boost to the DC universe in the coming years.
Gunn, who apparently left Twitter in 2023, took to Threads to share the exciting news this week. Milly Alcock, known for her role in House of the Dragon has been selected to play Supergirl in this new adaptation based on the 2022 comic by Tom King.
Gunn explained that Alcock’s casting was something he envisioned for more than a year, even before reading the comics.
His first impression of Milly came while watching her in House of the Dragon, where he highlighted her edge, grace and authenticity, elements he considers essential to the character of Supergirl in the DC Universe:
In case you missed this exciting news yesterday. Interestingly, Milly was the FIRST person I mentioned to Peter (Safran) for this role, over a year ago, when he had only read the comics.
How has Milly Alcock’s career been?
Born on April 11, 2000, in Sydney, this actress has excelled on screen, gaining recognition for her role in Upright and her portrayal of young Rhaenyra Targaryen in The House of the Dragon.
She took her first steps into the world of acting playing Little Red Riding Hood at Taverners Hill Infants School.
She began her school life at Stanmore Public School and later at Newtown High School of the Performing Arts, where her passion for acting led her to leave school in 2018 after being cast in Upright.
Alcock’s television debut came in 2014 in an episode of the romantic comedy Wonderland.
Her versatility led her to participate in commercials for brands such as NBN, Cadbury, KFC and Woolworths.
From 2015 to 2017, she was the face of Disney Channel in Australia, presenting the short shows BF Chefs and Hanging With.
In 2017, Alcock landed lead roles in the web miniseries High Life and the acclaimed drama series Janet King.
His television career continued to flourish with appearances on Fighting Season, A Place to Call Home, Pine Gap, and Les Norton.
The seventh art called her in 2018 with her first feature film, The School. However, it was in 2019 that Alcock reached new heights by starring in Upright.
Her portrayal of Meg, a teenage runaway roaming the Australian wilderness, earned her a Casting Guild of Australia Rising Star Award nomination and a spot as one of the youngest nominees at the AACTA Awards.
In July 2021, the world learned that Milly Alcock would play the young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in The House of the Dragon.
Her performance received critical praise and earned her a Critics’ Choice Television Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
Alcock’s versatility knows no limits. In January 2023, he ventured into the world of music by participating in the video for “Easy Now” by Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

Production is scheduled to begin in March, following Superman: Legacy as the first film of this renewed era of DC, with David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.
